True dental emergencies include sudden tooth pain or pressure, trauma from an accident or sports injury, a broken or knocked-out tooth, an infection causing swelling or fever, and a gum abscess. These issues rarely resolve on their own, and an infection can spread beyond the mouth if left untreated. They call for same-day care.

Mild sensitivity to hot or cold, a small chip that does not hurt, a lost filling or crown that is not painful, and food stuck between teeth can usually wait. Try floss first for trapped food. Waiting does not mean ignoring it, though. Book a regular appointment soon so a small problem does not become a true emergency.

Fast treatment reduces pain immediately, prevents an infection from spreading, gives the best chance of saving a natural tooth, and usually lowers overall treatment costs. The longer an urgent problem goes untreated, the more likely it needs a bigger procedure. Prompt diagnosis and same-day emergency care are offered whenever possible for exactly this reason.
